Viet Nam Clinical Week 1.1

I was going to break down my VN photo posts into clinics/trips in Ben Tre and clinics/trips in Can Gio. But I took so many pictures that there's no way I can do that (I'm already skipping a lot of pictures :( )! I need to break down each clinic site into smaller parts. Sorry I've taken so long to post/update about my VN trip. Hopefully I remember enough as I start rambling. I've been caught up attempting to study for boards or staring at nothing when I'm accidentally dazing off. So about the pictures now! We all met up with each other at the airport where we split up into group S (the doctors) and the rest of us Group A-E. Groups A-E each consisted of around 10-12 people (including team leader, assistant team leader, and at least one med/dent student). The first area we went to was Ben Tre (coconut candy place!). On the way there we ate at some restaurant that served okie dokie meh food. We started talking about how we're going to start losing so much weight on this trip if this is how the food's going to be like (fish, soup, unknown food, etc). Little did we know we'd all (or maybe just me) get hella plump from how much PVNF and the hotels were feeding us! But, I'll get to that later. Initially we all imagined our hotel to be dinky, run down, dirty, with scary toilets, but we were so lucky we got a stellar deal with Viet Uc Hotel. The woman who owns the hotel was from Australia, hence the name of the hotel being called Uc (Australia). It was incredible and amazing how wonderful the hotel was! There was a smoothie bar on the main floor, karaoke rooms, roof top swimming pool, huge conference room, and the night market a walking distance away. The hotel had a buffet line up (hello to being plump!).

So the first one or two days everyone prepped for clinic. Students packaged all the medicines and went on rotations for training such as learning how to take vitals and sterilizing dental instruments. Med students taught undergrad/high school students how to do vitals and thumb pricks. Dental students helped the dentists organize all the hand pieces, instruments, burs, gauze, needles, 2x2, amalgam, etc in a way that we knew where everything was so that we'd be ready to grab anything we needed for the next day. Surprisingly, that took forever. PVNF has portable dental chairs, light cure, sterilization system with pressure cookers, amalgamator, and portable hand piece set--that's amazingg!

Day 1 of clinic was at the place shown above. All we're given is a room and we had to set up tables and chairs for the dental chairs and sterilization station. I have to admit, first day was overwhelming for me. I couldn't grasp the emotions I was feeling. It was unbearably hot with no breeze, under masks and protective wear that just made us even hotter. The dentists were working really fast and we just felt the need to run constantly and do things as fast as possible. One of the moms on the trip would make us lunch at each clinic and people would prepare coconuts as our drinks. We were able to restore teeth using amalgam, glass ionomers, and composites (with a variety of shades to select from!). We put in temp material for primary teeth. We had an extraction team. It seemed all very high tech to me for a clinic setting up in what was initially an empty room with few outlets. Okay more about clinic, day trips, and other photos later! I have to study and too tired to detail the pictures above. Ta ta!
